The weight of it all(part 5)

The Weight of It All — Part 5 I think one of the most dangerous aspects of burnout is that many people do not even realize it is happening to them. Honestly, I never thought I would use the word "burnout" when it came to my career. Especially in EMS. In my mind, burnout was something that happened to other people, not me. Looking back, though, I am pretty sure burnout played a role in my aviation career as well. I just did not recognize it for what it was at the time. Not all burnout looks dramatic. Sometimes you still go to work every day. You still pay the bills. You still take care of your family. You still smile, joke around, and handle responsibilities. From the outside, everything looks normal. But inside, something starts changing. You get irritated more easily than you used to. Your patience gets shorter. Small things bother you more than they should. You start feeling mentally exhausted all the time, even after resting. Things that used to make you happy start feel...

The weight of it all(part 4)

The Weight of It All — Part 4 A lot of men grow up believing that asking for help is a sign of failure. You are supposed to figure it out, handle it, push through it, deal with it quietly, and keep moving. Somewhere along the way, many men learned that struggling is acceptable… as long as nobody sees it. So when life starts piling up, most men do what they have always done. They put their head down and carry more. Even when they are overwhelmed, exhausted, financially stressed, emotionally drained, or mentally running on fumes, they just keep going because they feel like they have to. The hard part is that many men do not even realize how much pressure they are carrying until it starts leaking out in other ways. Irritability. Anger. Pulling away from people. Losing patience over small things. Trouble sleeping. Feeling numb. Feeling stuck. And even then, many men still do not recognize what is happening. Instead of slowing down or talking to somebody, they try to cope with it in o...

The weight of it all(part 3)

The Weight of It All — Part 3 There is a pressure many men carry that rarely gets talked about. The pressure to provide. The pressure to fix things. The pressure to hold everything together, even when you feel like you are barely holding yourself together. Most men grow up believing that if something breaks, it is their job to handle it. The bills, the house, the car, the leaking faucet, the unexpected expense, the family problems, the future. Even when nobody says it out loud, you feel it. You feel the pressure to keep the ship afloat, no matter what is going on in your own head. Many men are not looking for praise or applause. Most of the time, they just want a moment where they do not feel like the entire weight of life is sitting on their shoulders. But instead, they stay quiet and keep carrying it because somewhere along the way, we learned that is what men are supposed to do. There is also another side to this that does not get talked about enough. A lot of men were never t...

The weight of it all(part 2)

The Weight of It All — Part 2 One of the hardest things for a lot of men is carrying stress while feeling like they have nobody they can actually talk to about it. Sure, most men have friends. People they joke with, work with, watch football with, or send memes back and forth to. But having people around and actually having someone you can be honest with are two completely different things. The truth is, we are more disconnected now than we have ever been. Years ago, if you wanted to talk to somebody, you picked up the phone. You heard their voice. You sat on a porch, at a kitchen table, or in a garage somewhere and actually talked. There was a connection in it. Now, most conversations happen through texts, emails, comments, memes, or quick messages while everybody is distracted by ten other things. We scroll through people’s lives all day long, yet many of us barely know how the people closest to us are actually doing. We are constantly connected to technology, but deeply discon...

The Weight of It All

The Weight of It All — Part 1 Most men aren’t falling apart… They just get tired of carrying everything. Work. Bills. The house. The car. The expectations. Being the one people count on. The one that fixes things. The one who figures it out. It’s not one big thing. It’s everything… all the time. And the truth is, most men don’t talk about it. Not because they don’t feel it… But because somewhere along the way, they learned they’re not supposed to. So they keep going. Handle what needs to be handled. Say “I’m good” when they’re not. And over time, it just stacks up. This is the start of a series—because this isn’t just one conversation. We’re going to talk about: • The pressure to provide—even when it never feels like enough • Always being the one expected to fix everything • Carrying stress without having anyone to actually talk to • Feeling behind… even when you’re doing everything right • Why asking for help feels like failure • The quiet burnout that doesn’t look like burnout ...
