Repentance isn't what I thought it was ( Part 4)

I always thought repentance was something you did once.

You repented when you accepted Christ... And then you moved on.

That's what I believed for a long time.

But as God continued to teach me through His Word, I realized I had misunderstood that too. Repentance isn't just the doorway into the Christian life. It's also part of walking with Christ every day.

When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Our sins are washed away. We are made new. That never has to happen again.

But even though our relationship with God has been made secure through Christ, we still live in a world filled with temptation, and we still struggle against our sinful nature.

That's why repentance doesn't end the day we're saved.

It becomes part of our daily walk with Him. Not because we're trying to earn God's forgiveness over and over again. But because we love Him and desire to walk closely with Him.

The Apostle John wrote these words to believers:

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

— 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

Notice who John was writing to. He wasn't writing to people who were trying to become Christians. He was writing to Christians.

That surprised me.

Repentance isn't about becoming God's child over and over again. It's about walking closely with the Father who has already made us His child.

Think about it this way.

If I say something hurtful to my wife, she doesn't stop being my wife. Our relationship hasn't changed. But my actions have created distance between us. The loving thing to do is admit I was wrong, ask for forgiveness, and make things right.

Our relationship with God is similar.

When we sin, we don't lose our salvation. But sin can affect how closely we're walking with Him. When the Holy Spirit convicts us, repentance is our response.

We don't run from God. We run back to Him.

That was another misunderstanding I had.

I thought repentance was something I left behind when I came to Christ. Instead, I've learned it's one of the ways God continues changing me to become more like Christ.

So yes...

Christians still repent. Not because we're trying to be saved again. But because we already belong to Him, and we want to walk closely with our Father.
