Things to ask your dad...Joey
I came across a guy on Instagram who posted a series of questions, It was things to ask your dad before it's too late. This struck a chord with me, as I have recently lost my dad some questions pop into my head all the time that I want to ask my dad about. These questions are asked as if I were the son asking my dad, however, I am changing it around and making it as if my kids are asking me these questions. I will make each post the answers for each of my kids. I hope this works out the way it does in my head.
Next, I am going older. Joey is my stepson but he is my son. If you don't know Joey, you have never met Joey.
1. What is your favorite memory of us?
This is a really tough one for me, whenever you are around it is a fun time. I love the fact that you reference movies, music, and just funny sayings. I loved to see you interact with Kennon, y'all had fun telling corny jokes together.
2. What were the first few days of fatherhood like?
I have to say that when we all moved in together it was not easy for me. I was used to things being one way and you were used to things another way. I will be the first to admit that I was not an easy person to be around. I wanted things a certain way and it seemed like when I was home from work it wasn't that way and I was frustrated. I did learn that I had to compromise, and I think that once I changed my ways things got better. At least I felt it did.
3. What have you learned about love, and what has it taught you?
I have learned that there are different kinds of love, just because you are opposites doesn't mean that you aren't compatible, and I have also learned that there is someone for everyone. We should not have to change for anyone and we should not have to provide a certain thing to gain someone's love. Your mom and I are polar opposites but we make that work and we compromise to make each other happy. I have seen people hold out for a long time for just the right person. It is better to wait for that right person for years and years than to be miserable with the wrong person.
4. What was a moment you felt most proud of me?
Joey, there are 2 things that I want to say here. First, you don't quit. You get down and out but you bounce back, throw up a big F you, and get back to business. Recently, you have been through a very rough time but you have plowed through and are making things better for yourself. Second, You have accomplished things that I have wanted to accomplish. You have lost over 100 lbs, and you have lifted and done things in the gym that I could only dream of. Those are some amazing accomplishments and I am in awe of what you can do.
5. What do you want or wish most for your kids?
I am pretty sure the answer to this question is going to be the same for each of y'all. I want my kids to be happy. I want them to be happy with who they are with, happy where they live, happy where they work, and most of all...happy with themselves.
6. What is the nicest thing I have done for you?
On many occasions, you have either posted things or sent me kind messages that have meant a lot to me. It feels good to know that what I have done for my family has been noticed and or appreciated. A text or a call out of the blue from any of the kids really makes me feel so good.
7. What is one thing that you want me to always remember after you are gone?
You are the most important person in your life. You are who you need to make happy, you make decisions in what is best for your life. There are times in your life when you have to make tough decisions but as long as you make them with the thoughts of yourself deep down then you can't go wrong. Don't settle.
Joey, you are a fine young man. You have a great heart and you like to make others happy. This season of your life isn't going how you wanted it to go, but you are on a solid path and things will continue to get better. I am proud of the man that you are and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for you.
